Steelhead are anadramous fish that share their origin with the Atlantic and Pacific Salmon.
Although native to the West Coast of North America and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, Steelhead are also found in the tributaries of the Great Lakes.
They were planted into the Lakes numerous times in the late 1800's and could be found throughout the Lakes watershed.
Since first classified, they were considered sea-run Rainbow Trout. However, in the most recent classifications, the tables were turned and this sea-run Steelhead is considered the "normal" state for the Rainbow Trout.
Now they are classified as part of the Pacific Salmon family and the Salmon Gairdneri has become the Oncorhynchus Mykiss.
By whatever name you call them, they are arguably the hottest freshwater fish you can catch on a fly rod.
One of the draws of both winter and summer-run steelhead fishing is the wide array of angling techniques that prove effective on these anadromous trout.
Many of these techniques are also effective for most Pacific Salmon species, especially those techniques that present offerings that are moving slowly through the fish's field of view.
Here you can find a general overview of some of the most basic principles of steelhead and salmon fishing.
